Biomimetics and Materials Chemistry

The group has a deep knowledge of the chemical and structural aspects of the biomineralisation processes of biological tissues, which it utilizes as model systems for the design and development of innovative biomaterials for the repair of the muscular-skeletal system. In particular, the research activity is focused on the preparation and characterization of bio-functionalized nano- and micro-crystalline calcium phosphates; oriented growth of inorganic phases on functionalized matrices, calcium phosphate bone cements, inorganic-polymeric composite scaffolds for rigenerative medicine.

Laboratory of Crystal Engineering

Analysis of solids of phramaceutical and agrochemical interest: (1) structural determination via X-ray single crystal and powder diffraction; (2) qualitative and quantitative analysis via X-ray powder diffraction; (3) thermal characterization via DSC, TGA, hot-stage microscopy , variable temperatue X-ray diffraction; (4) polymorph screening (polymorphs, solvates, co-crystals, salts); (5) opinions on patent issues concerning crystal forms (polymorphs, solvates, ecc.).

Biocrystallography and Biomineralization Group

The research activities of the group include: (1) structural studies and determination of the crystal structure of biological macromolecules and pseudo-peptides; (2) study of biomineralization processes with particular interest in the role of the organic matrix in mineral deposition; (3) synthesis and characterization of innovative substrates for the crystallization of minerals and bio-macromolecules. Techniques used: single crystal X-ray diffraction (synchrotron radiation) and powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), FTR-IR, thermogravimetric and calorimetric analysis, crystallization techniques of proteins and bio-minerals.
